Abstract

[Also in Division F4] The distance between two tube plates 5 and 7 in a shell and tube heat-exchanger is fixed by a central support bar (9, Fig. 1, not shown) extending between and integrally secured to the plates; and one end of each tube 81 is removably secured in fixed sealing arrangement in a corresponding aperture in the tube plate 7, the other end of the tube being removably secured in sliding sealing arrangement in a corresponding aperture 55 in the tube plate 5. As shown, the tubes are disposed within a flanged casing 19 at the ends of which are header boxes 11 and (13) (Fig. 1). Seals 25, 37 and 79 prevent fluid leakage from the casing. The joints between the tubes and the tube plates are sealed by packings 71 and 73 which are tightened by nuts 67 and 69. In the tube plate 7 the seal 73 when tightened, expands into a groove 83 in the tube wall, hence fixing the tube end to the plate. In the tube plate 5 the tubes are a slide fit in apertures 63 in the tube plate hence permitting axial movement of the tube due to expansion or contraction in service. The heat-exchanger is intended for use with corrosive fluids and the tube plates 5 and 7 may be made of ceramic or plastics materials or of metal enamelled or coated with rubber, plastics or tantalum. The tubes may be of glass, quartz, porcelain, aluminium oxide, graphite plastics, metal or metal alloy, and may be enamelled or lined with plastics material. The casing and other constructional parts of the heat-exchanger may also be made of these materials.
