Abstract
The Specification relates to a modification of the invention of the parent Specification 1, 024, 769. The process of forming fibrous sheet material, namely artificial leather, comprises the steps of forming an intermeshed fibrous mat in which the fibres at and adjacent one surface lie parallel to that surface and are oriented to resist lengthwise and widthwise forces exerted on the mat, impregnating the mat with an aqueous suspension of distinct swollen microscopic collagen fibres, and removing the water to reaggregate the collagen fibres to reinforce the intermeshed fibrous mat. The fibrous mat is impregnated, dried as by the addition of acetone then tanned, e.g. chrometanned or vegetable-tanned to give the appearance of leather. The intermeshed fibrous mat may comprise two or more layers of fibres, one of which may be needled, or may comprise crimped fibres. The intermeshed mat may comprise cotton, wool, polyamide (nylon), polyester, acrylic, cellulosic, or polypropylene fibres. Alternatively the mat may comprise collagen fibres heated to decrease their affinity for water. The tanned sheet material may be fatliquored e.g. with acetone containing 4%, by weight, of dissolved oleic acid, dried in air, and coated with an alkoxy derivative of nylon.ALSO:The specification relates to a modification of the invention of the parent Specification 1,024,769.
