Abstract

A pigment coating composition comprises a slurry of pigment in water and a binder for the pigment, the binder comprising polyvinyl alcohol having a polymerization degree of less than 1200, the composition also containing an auxiliary adhesive in latex form. In examples a slurry of clay, sodium hexametaphosphate and water, a styrene-butadiene latex and a melamine resin as a water-resisting agent are used. In a comparative example carboxymethylcellulose is used.ALSO:Paper is coated with a pigment coating composition comprising a slurry of pigment in water and a binder for the pigment, the binder comprising polyvinyl alcohol having a polymerisation degree of less than 1200, the composition also containing an auxiliary adhesive in latex form. In Examples are used: a slurry of clay, sodium hexametaphosphate and water, a styrene-butadiene latex, and a melamine resin as a water-resisting agent, and carboxmethylcellulose in a comparative Example. The papers were treated with aqueous solutions of borax and sodium aluminate.
