Abstract

1,111,565. Power-assisted rack and pinion steering. HYDROSTEER Ltd. 27 Sept., 1965 [6 Oct., 1964], No. 40684/64. Heading B7H. In a steering mechanism comprising a rack 1 formed on a rod 4 part of which is enclosed by a cylinder 6 to form an annular space in which is slidable a double-acting piston 5 attached to the rod, hydraulic fluid is admitted to one or other side of the piston 5 under the control of a valve 8 actuated through a lever 12 of the first order by the reaction between the rack 1 and pinion 2. The steering box, in which the pinion is mounted, the valve and the cylinder. form a self-rigid assembly. The rack is supported by a saddle 3 which may be spring- loaded and the pinion is mounted in bores at the ends of twin arms at one end of the lever 12 the other end of which is articularly connected to the valve by a link 14. The pivot 15 of the lever is mounted in the steering box on the side of the pinion remote from the rack.
