Abstract
1,111,540. Control of motors; charging and discharging batteries; multi-winding machines; accessories; motor driving arrangements. SCOVILL MANUFACTURING CO. 17 Nov., 1966 [28 March, 1966], No. 51639/66. Headings H2A, H2H and H2J. A tool is powered by a motor whose armature has high and low voltage windings 37, 36 connected to respective commutators 26, 25, for energization from rectified A.C. mains and a battery respectively, and charging means are provided. As shown, a common rectifier bridge 33 supplies the motor and the charging circuit, which comprises metal clad resistors 38, 39 mounted on the motor casing as a heat sink, and a switch 34 enables selection between mains or battery operation, or charging. Both armature windings may be energized in series during mains operation. In alternative arrangements a separate rectifier is provided for charging, with a capacitor in the A.C. side for current limiting, and the selector switch is replaced by one operated by the supply plug so that charging occurs while the plug is in and the motor switched off (at 35), and the absence of the plug automatically ensures battery operation. Embodiments are described having various combinations of these features, all the elements being contained within the tool casing, but in another embodiment (Fig. 11, not shown) the charging circuit is completed through a resistor contained in a separate stand (50) and in another (Fig. 14, not shown) a separate stand contains a transformer, diodes and resistor for charging. It is mentioned that the motor may have more than two windings, to suit a like number of voltages, and bridge rectifiers may be replaced by single diodes with smoothing capacitors.
