Abstract
Compositions suitable for making dyeable articles comprise uniform mixtures of stereo-regular polypropylene with (a) 1 to 10 weight per cent of a linear thermoplastic polyamide and (b) 1 to 15 weight per cent of an addition copolymer of ethylene and an ethylenically unsaturated ester of a saturated fatty acid wherein the ratio of ester to ethylene units is 15:85 to 60:40 by weight or a product obtained by partial or complete hydrolysis of such a copolymer, the total concentration of (a) and (b) being 5 to 20 weight per cent. The polyamides may be derived from dimerized fatty acids and polyamines, preferably diamines, and the copolymers from vinyl acetate, formate or propionate, allyl acetate or propionate, isopropenyl butyrate or hexenyl acetate. Complexforming metal compounds, particularly organic compounds of zinc, cadmium, aluminium, tin, chromium, iron, cobalt and nickel, may also be present. Examples describe the dyeing of filaments spun from compositions of polypropylene, polyamides and hydrolysed and unhydrolysed ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers.ALSO:Shaped articles made of compositions comprising a uniform mixture of stereoregular polypropylene and (a) 1 to 10 weighs per cent of a linear thermoplastic polyamide and (b) 1 to 15 weight per cent of an addition copolymer of ethylene and an ethylenically unsaturated ester of a saturated fatty acid wherein the ratio of ester to ethylene units is 15:85 to 60:40 by weight or a partial or complete hydrolysis product of such a copolymer, the total concentration of (a) and (b) being 5 to 20 weight per cent, are dyed with direct, disperse, acid, chrome, premetallised, vat, vat ester, sulphur, metal-chelating, onium, ingrain, condensation, metallisable disperse, reactive and azo dyes. The compositions may also comprise complex-forming metal compounds, particularly organic compounds of zinc, cadmium, aluminium, tin, chromium, iron, cobalt and nickel. In examples filaments spun from compositions comprising polypropylene, polyamides derived from dimarised fatty acids and diamines, and unhydrolysed or partially hydrolysed ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers are scoured with non-ionic detergent and dyed with disperse, acid, metallised 1:1, metallised 1:2, direct, vat, vat ester, sulphur, chrome, ingrain, condensation, azo, metallisable and reactive dyes.
