Abstract

Fibrous, water-insoluble, alkali-soluble carboxymethylcellulose is mixed with paper stock, the mixture is formed into a paper web, and the web is dried and thereafter heat-treated at 60 DEG to 110 DEG C. The paper stock may be wood pulp, straw or hemp alone or a mixture of one of these with one or more of bast-fibre pulp, poaceous pulp, inorganic fibre pulp, e.g. asbestos, glass or carbon, and waste paper stock. Fillers such as clay, titanium white and talca and dyestuffs may also be present. The product disintegrates rapidly in caustic alkali, and is suitable for bottle labels.
