Abstract

An electrode for arc furnace may be prepared by placing carbon powder in a flexible container and subjecting to an isostatic pressure. Subsequently, the compressed carbon body may be graphitized. The pressure may be applied through a liquid, gaseous or other pressure medium. In a preferred embodiment, the flexible container with the carbon is placed inside a pressure chamber containing the pressure medium, and pressure applied to the medium by means of, for example, a pump or a compressor. Suitable pressure are given as above 1000 atm., e.g. 2500-4000 atm. If desired the electrode may be heated during compression.
