Heading A2C, [Also in Division B2] Tobacco leaves are stripped by concentrically arranged stripper drums and cages of different diameter mounted one within the other. As shown, tobacco to be stripped is fed by a shoot 62 to a stripper 4 consisting of a stripper drum 6 and stripper cage 8. Stripped material passes up ducts 42 to one of three separating chambers as 38 by reason of suction applied by a common exhaust duct 60. Heavier material consisting of stems and stems with leaf still attached fall back through openings as 51, 53 to a stripper 21 consisting of a drum 32 and cage 34 when further separating takes place, the separated material flowing up ducts as 56. Heavier material falls through the strippers on to a conveyer belt 64. The stripper 4 is driven by wheels 16 which engage a ring 14 on the drum 6 and the stripper 21 is driven via a pulley 30 and shaft 22. In an alternative embodiment the cage of the inner stripper has mounted thereon stripper teeth, is rotated and constitutes drum of the outer stripper. In this case the ducts 56 are omitted, the material stripped in the inner stripper being returned to the separating chamber via the outer stripper. New material may be introduced into the inner stripper initially instead of the outer stripper, three concentric strippers may be used instead of two, the material may be introduced and heavy material removed by means other than shoots and conveyer belts respectively and the volume of the separating chamber may be made variable.
