Abstract

1,110,763. Mineral mining machines; dust suppression. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. 29 Jan., 1965 [29 Oct., 1963], No. 42654/ 63. Heading E1F. Water for dust suppression is supplied only to those cutter picks or the like on a rotary, tool-carrying mineral mining machine e.g. a shearer drum 1, Fig. 1, which are in cutting engagement with a mineral face at any given instant, through a stationary tube 22 mounted in the drive shaft 2 to a chamber 16 formed between plates 13, 15 mounted on the shaft for rotation. The chamber tapers radially towards a peripheral parallel-sided portion 16a which houses a non-rotatable disc 20 having a peripheral cut-out portion. The plate 15 has circumferentially-spaced passages 18 communicating at one side with the chamber 16 and at the other with pipes 19 leading to the shell 7 of the drum, and from thence to each cutter pick. Water only flows to the passages 18 when the cut-away portion of the pre-set disc 20 does not obstruct the flow. Each pick box 9, Fig. 3, has a check valve 42 for the medium, formed in a passage 40 which terminates in a spray or jet block 43 to direct the medium on to the leading face of the pick. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6, the disc 20 obstructs the flow of medium to ports in a circular row in the rotary plate 13 leading to the passages 18 and in a further modification, Figs. 7 and 8, a resilient curved closure strip 65 secured to the marginal edge of the disc 20 obstructs the flow to the passages 18.
