Abstract

An I.C. engine valve train component has at least its bearing surface portions made of a ferrous alloy having the following composition:-% by weight carbon 3.00-3.55, silicon 2.00-2.90, manganese 0.70-1.10, nickel 0.15-0.70, chromium 0.40-1.25, molybdenum 0.15-0.70, tungsten 0.50-10.00 balance iron and impurities. The components may be cam-shafts, tappets or rocker arms formed completely of the alloy. Alternatively the bearing surface portions only may be formed of the alloy. An exemplary heat treatment is 1580 DEG F. for about 30 minutes and quenching in oil.
