Abstract

1,110,345. Rollers. BELOIT CORPORATION. 6 July, 1966 [16 Aug., 1965], No. 30298/66. Heading F2U. A roll 11 which is freely rotatable on a non-rotatable shaft 15 rigidly supported at its ends is driven from a shaft 33 through a bevel gear 48, (42), 44 and a universal joint 23. As shown, the support for the shaft 15 comprises a ring 39 surrounding the shaft and engaged by arcuate segments 36, 37 of a housing 30 which encloses the bevel gear and universal joint. The housing 30 is supported by a pedestal (31), Fig. 1 (not shown). The bevel idler gears (42) are freely rotatable on pins 41 which pass through the shaft 15 and ring 39. As shown, the deflection of the roll is controlled by radially acting pistons 17 and shoes 16 which bear on the inner surface of the roll 11.
