Abstract
<PICT:1109311/C6-C7/1> Grain solids are recovered from spent liquor from the production of grain whisky by reducing the suspended-solids content of the spent liquor (as by centrifuging it) and concentrating the solids-reduced spent liquor by evaporation. The suspended-solids content of the spent liquor should be reduced to not more than 0.5% by weight and this may be achieved indirectly by passing unfiltered mash through a multi-stage rotary vacuum filter to remove suspended grain solids and draff. The operational steps are diagrammatically depicted in the figure. Up to 30% of the input to the fermenter can consist of solids-reduced spent wash from the distillation column. The evaporator 6 may consist of multi-stage tube-type and plate-type evaporators. The highly concentrated syrup, of up to 60% solids content, obtained by the evaporation may be dried to produce distillers' dried solubles or mixed with the draff and grain solids and then dried to produce distillers' dark grains.
