Abstract
<PICT:1109053/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1109053/C6-C7/2> <PICT:1109053/C6-C7/3> <PICT:1109053/C6-C7/4> <PICT:1109053/C6-C7/5> A method of electrolytically marking metal comprises flooding the surface, 10, to be marked with an electrolyte and bringing an electrode, 16, into close proximity with said metal surface 10 such that electrolytic action occurs between the two, the electrode bearings, either in relief or in intaglio, the letters, figures or other markings with which it is required to mark said surface. As shown electrolyte is supplied via a nozzle 14, and non-conducting elements 18 are provided to limit the movement of the electrode 16 towards the workpiece 12. The electrode may be encased in a block (24) of epoxy resin Fig. 2 (not shown) through which block also extends a main electrolyte flow passage (26) connecting with a plurality of flow passages (28) having their outlets in the face of the resin block adjacent the electrode, whereby electrolyte may be discharged on to the surface being marked. Electrolysis may be carried out using a voltage of up to 20 volts, a current density of about 150 amps/sq. inch for a time of 1/10 to 20 secs.
