Abstract
1,108,930. Continuous casting-machines. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 26 May, 1966 [3 June, 1965], No. 23668/66. Heading B3F. Apparatus for continuous casting refractory metallic materials e.g. uranium carbide, comprises an electron beam gun 1 for melting granular material 26 fed into a mould formed by grooves 7, 9 of rotating pulleys 6, 8 and an axially movable base or plunger 4. The rotating pulleys prevents the accumulation of an undesirable layer on the mould surface and the grooves may be brushed or scraped as they are rotated to further prevent this. To ensure good distribution of the granular material in the mould the mould may be rotated about the axis of the plunger 4 by means of a motor 30 and gears 29, 31 driving a base 20 on which the pulleys 6, 8 are mounted in end-plates 18 and on water-cooled shafts 14, 16. The pulleys 6, 8 may be connected to pinions (17), (19) (Fig. 2, not shown) connected to each other and to the plunger 4 by a double-sided rack 25 and driven synchronously by a motor (23). The grooves (33), (35) (Fig. 3, not shown) may include projections (36) that notch the cast ingot at regular intervals so that the ingot can be broken into equal lengths.
