A machine for binding coils of wire &c. in which the binding wire is passed through a guide 10 to surround the coil, tightened and secured by twisting and in which part 11 of the guide is pivotable away from the other part to permit introduction of the coils 3, has the wire feed means, drive motor, and twister head 6 mounted on a carriage 1, the carriage running freely on rails 2 sloping away from the binding position so as to impose a yieldable force on the wire by gravity during the tensioning operation and pull the twisting grippers clear of the cut wire ends. Rolls 5 feed in the wire 4 to the guide 10 to be engaged by a gripper, reversal of the rolls then pulling the wire from the guide and twisting and severing taking place (not detailed). During tensioning, the carriage is drawn up the slope. When the twist is severed, the carriage returns under gravity, thus ensuring release of the twist ends from the head. To admit a coil, the guide portion 11 is tilted upwards by a cylinder 13. This initiates a signal causing feeding in of the coil. The gripping force of the wire clamp is adjustable and during twisting the wire may be drawn out, precluding breakage. A heat screen 29 is provided for when hot articles are being bound.
