An apparatus for securing identification plates 91 to articles such as hot metal billets comprises a remotely-controlled cartridge-actuated fastener driving tool 24 having a block 93 for locating the plate and carried by a support 92, the latter being movable so as to bring the block to a working position from an inoperative position. The tool includes a driving plunger 43 slidable in a barrel 33 which is mounted in a casing 24 and provided with a cartridge chamber 50; the portion of the barrel adjacent the cartridge chamber is held against a firing pin guide 52 by means of a manually-actuated catch 59 so that by releasing the catch the tool pivots about a pin 27 and exposes the chamber for loading. The support 22 is mounted on a carriage (13, Fig. 1) which is movable on rails (11) towards and away from a metal billet (86). In operation, a nail 89 together with a washer 90 is inserted into the block 93 which is connected to a sleeve 39 slidable in the barrel 33 against the action of a spring 40. An identification plate is then positioned on the block 93 and held in place by a magnet (48, Fig. 3). Manual and foot actuated switches are operated and the carriage moved so that the block 93 is pressed against the side of the billet, the block moving inwardly until a further switch (73, Fig. 3) is actuated thereby energizing a solenoid 62. A striker 67 on the armature 63 then strikes the firing pin 51 to fire the cartridge. A pair of identical tools are mounted on the support so as to drive a nail into each end of the identification plate. In modifications the carttridge may be fired by electrodes instead of the solenoid-operated firing pin or by hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical means.
