Abstract

A solid casting incorporating a resin-impregnated insert, e.g. a high voltage insulation is made by placing the insert, e.g. a laminated paper winding in a mould for the casting, maintaining the mould under partial vacuum and filling it with casting resin so that the insert is impregnated expelling from the mould the resin not absorbed by the insert and then gravity filling the mould with a second resin and curing both resins simultaneously. The second resin may either be the same as the first but containing a filler, or a different resin. The apparatus for carrying out the process comprises an autoclave 10, heated by circulating hot oil through a lining 11, and connected through a valve 14 to a vacuum pump. A mould 20 mounted in the autoclave is connected through valves 32 and 33 to a resin container 30 by a passage 24 leading from the bottom of the mould cavity. In making an epoxy-resin-insulated transformer a paper strip 55 incorporating a high-voltage electrical winding and a conductor 56 are inserted into the mould. The autoclave is evacuated to 0À5 mm. Hg and heated for 11 hours. Epoxy resin mix is stirred by stirrer 43 in the container 30 under the same degree of partial vacuum. Valves 32, 33 are then opened and the epoxy resin passes through passage 24 to fill the mould and rise into reservoir 22. Valves 32, 33 are then closed and the vacuum is maintained in the autoclave for an hour after which bleed-off valve 16 is opened thereby the pressure rises to atmosphere. Valves 32, 33 are then opened and the resin not absorbed by the insert is returned by the differential pressure to the container 30. Valves 32, 33 are closed and bleed valve 41 opened to restore the pressure in the container to atmospheric. Filler and colouring agent are then stirred into the resin mix; the container and autoclave are evacuated to 0À5 mm. Hg and valves 32, 33 opened whereby the filled resin flows into the mould. Valves 32, 33 are closed and the resin cured after which the moulded transformer is removed from the mould by separation of its two halves 20A and 20B. When a different second resin is used, the container 30 is detached at seal 31 and replaced.
