Abstract
1,108,167. Continuous-casting processes. ERIK OLSSON A.G. 23 July, 1965 [23 July, 1964], No. 31471/65. Heading B3F. A continuously-cast strand is moved forwards by the forward movement of a longitudinallyoscillated and cooled mould 3 but is prevented from moving back with the mould by freshly solidified metal at the inlet of the mould forming between the earlier solidified metal and a nozzle 2 which projects from a feeder vessel 1 into the mould inlet. Either the mould or the strand, or both, may be vibrated to decrease sticking and improve grain structure. The strand path may be downwardly sloped to assist the forward movement and if the slope is small there may be rolls 5 or clamping jaws for moving the strand forward in steps in synchronism with the mould. If the slope is large, the rolls 5 beyond the mould exert a braking effect on the strand. The mould walls at the inlet may be inwardly curved to reduce the cross-sectional area and assist the strand movement. The strand may be cooled by water sprays or cooling jaws or by passing it through a sand bed.
