Abstract
A ladle for vacuum degassing is provided with a cover in which are mounted electrical heating means and which has an opening through which molten metal is charged, the ladle being located below and capable of vacuum-tight connection to a vessel initially containing the metal and being provided with a closable discharge opening. In the charging opening of the cover there is located on electrically conductive tube which serves both to conduct the molten metal to the ladle and as a contact for at least one resistance heater extending radially from the tube. As shown in Fig. 1, ladle 1 has a cover 2 which is enclosed by a vacuum-tight hood 8, on which is located receptacle 14 of metal to be treated <PICT:1108029/C6-C7/1> and which is connected to vacuum pumps by a conduit 7. When the ladle is evacuated the molten metal is allowed to melt sealing plate 9 and flow through central tube 5, which may be made of graphite and may have a replaceable refractory liner 6. At least one radial resistance heater 3 is supported at its inner end on tube 5, being maintained in contact therewith by plunger mechanism 13 and supplied with current from cable 10 by a water-cooled contact.
