Abstract

A composition suitable for use in the crease-proofing of cellulosic fabrics comprises an aqueous solution consisting of or comprising glyoxylic acid and at least one methylolated derivative of a cyclic alkyene urea. The methylolated cyclic alkylene urea may be dimethylol dihydroxy-ethylene urea or the methylolated condensate of dihydroxyethylene urea with acrylamide. The solution may also contain other catalysts e.g. hexahydrated magnesium chloride and hexahydrated zinc nitrate, softeners and high molecular weight vinyl or acrylic polymers.ALSO:Cellulosic fabrics, e.g. cotton, are crease-proofed by impregnating them with an aqueous solution consisting of or comprising glyoxylic acid and at least one methylolated derivative of a cyclic alkylene urea, squeezing out excess solution, drying them and subjecting them to a thermal operation, e.g. at 130 DEG -180 DEG C, for from one minute to one hour. The methylolated cyclic alkylene urea may be dimethylol di-hydroxy-ethylene urea or the methylolated condensate of dihydroxyethylene urea with acrylamide. The solution may also contain other catalysts, e.g. hexahydrated magnesium chloride and hexahydrated zinc nitrate, softeners and high molecular weight vinyl or acrylic polymers.
