Abstract

Ethylene copolymers are prepared by reacting ethylene with acrylic and/or methacrylic acid and, optionally, an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl ester of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group, the molar ratio of ethylene to acrylic component(s) being from 8:1 to 10,000:1, in the presence of t-butanol and a free radical catalyst having a half-life below 5 hours at the polymerization temperature, the reaction being effected at an ethylene pressure of 20-450 atmospheres and a temperature below 100 DEG C., and the acrylic component(s) and catalyst, or solutions thereof in t-butanol, being added continuously and simultaneously to the reaction mixture. The process can be carried out batchwise or continuously. Catalysts specified are lauroyl peroxide, 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide, diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate, dicyclohexyl - peroxydicarbonate, acetyl cyclohexanesulphonyl peroxide and azodiisobutyronitrile. The copolymer products can undergo esterification, salt formation, amidation or cross-linking. The copolymers are suitable for the production of shaped articles, e.g. fibres or foils, and for use as sealing materials, adhesives and thickeners.
