Abstract

Silica which is substantially metal-free, carbon free and water free is produced by the introduction of high purity silicon into a plasma induced by a radio frequency in a stream of argon and oxygen. Metallic silicon is deposited in the cold region and then converted to silica by oxidation. The silica may be used as windows for absorption cells, or in coatings.
