1,105,656. Automatic wear compensation of brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 11 June, 1965 [18 March, 1964], No. 11402/64. Heading F2E. In an automatic adjuster for a vehicle shoedrum brake a housing 17 mounted to the backplate houses a spindle 21 formed in two parts which are connected by a coupling 41. Axial movement of the spindle is prevented by collars 22, 23, the collar 22 being formed as a worm-wheel. The ends of the spindle are in screw threaded engagement with oppositely internally threaded sleeves 14, 15 which provide abutments for shoes 10, 11. When the brakes are applied, a spring-loaded bar 32 follows the shoe 11, and when the movement of the shoe is excessive causes rotation of a worm 25, Fig. 2 (not shown), which is in engagement with the worm-wheel 22 and which is connected to a rack 31 (not shown) formed on the bar 32 through a ratchet and pinion 26, 28 (not shown). The rotation of the worm turns the spindle 21 causing the sleeves 14, 15 to move outwards taking up the slack in the brake. Manual adjusters 19 are provided. The worm may also be rotated by a lever pivoted on the back plate and coupled to the brake actuating cam. In another embodiment suitable for a duoservo brake (not shown) the spindle is free to move axially through the worm-wheel 22 to which it is connected by a key.
