Abstract

A process for isolating a substance having antiviral activity, designated as AVF, from plants comprises macerating virus-infected plant tissue with water, filtering off the solid residue, and separating the infective virus from the filtrate by adsorption. Thus crude AVF may be treated to further concentrate the contained AVF by ion-exchange column chromatography techniques and dialysis. The AVF may be formulated in compositions for agricultural and pharmaceutical use.
