Abstract

A dispersing agent substantially free from flocculating properties comprises a water-soluble hydrolysed polyacrylonitrile (or a polymer produced by a copolymerization reaction and having substantially the same structure as the hydrolysed polyacrylonitrile) having a molecular weight of from 5000 to 40,000 and having from 20-30% amide units and 70-80% carboxyl units. The polymer is preferably prepared by hydrolysing polyacrylonitrile of appropriate molecular weight with NaOH in an aqueous medium at elevated temperature, e.g. between 50-100 DEG C. In an example, the parent polymer is obtained by polymerizing acrylonitrile in water using an ammonium persulphate/sodium bisulphite catalyst.ALSO:A dispersing agent suitable for keeping particles of insoluble substances suspended in aqueous systems to prevent fouling of equipment or surfaces comprises a water-soluble hydrolysed polyacrylonitrile (or an equivalent polymer produced by copolymerization) having a molecular weight from 5000 to 40,000 and having from 20-30% amide units and 70-80% carboxyl units. An example illustrates the effectiveness of the dispersant in aqueous suspensions of kaolin and g -iron oxide (Fe2O3).
