The economiser 1 of a shell boiler, heated by smoke tubes 2, has a cooler 5 for continuous blow down from the boiler, disposed near its water inlet 3 in the coolest water layer. The economiser may comprise a separate vessel from the boiler or may be contained in a separate part of the same vessel separated from the boiler by a double plate baffle with a narrow water space in between.
