Abstract
Linear polymers consisting of, or comprising, butadiene units, are made by polymerizing an alicyclic compound which contains at least one alicyclic ring which may be substituted, the ring having at least eight carbon atoms and one, two or three carbon-to-carbon double bonds in the ring, by contacting the alicyclic compound with a catalyst comprising an admixture of (a) an organometallic compound of a metal of Groups Ia, IIa, IIb, and IIIa of the Periodic Table of elements, and (b) a salt of Mo or W. The polymerization is effected by conventional low-pressure methods. The Specification contains an extensive list of alicyclic compounds. Exemplified alicyclic compounds are cyclo-octene, cyclododecene, cyclododecatriene, and 1,5-cyclo-octadiene. The polymerization reaction may be controlled by incorporating in it release agents which upon heating deactivate the catalysts. By suitable selecting the appropriate alicyclic compound containing two or three double bonds the following linear polymers may be obtained, a polymer comprising repeating units of the formula -CH2-CH = CH-CH2-(CH2)4-, alternating copolymers of butadiene and butylene, alternating terpolymers of butadiene-1,3, styrene and ethylene, alternating copolymers of butadiene and isoprene, alternating terpolymers of butadiene-1,3, acrylonitrile and ethylene, an alternating terpolymer of butadiene, vinyl chloride or vinyl acetate and ethylene, 1,4-polybutadiene containing less than 0.3% of 1,2-polymer units and comprising alternating cisand trans-vinylene groups, and a polybutadiene having less than 0.2% of 1,2-vinyl structure, the remainder having a 1,4-structure of which 20 to 90% is in cis-1,4-configuration. The polymerization is preferably effected in bulk, and fillers such as carbon black, pigments &c., may be present. Moulded products may be conventionally vulcanized or vulcanized by an ionizing radiation.
