Abstract
A composition for reducing the surface tension of an aqueous solution comprises an organic surfactant and an organosiloxane-oxyalkylene block copolymer comprising at least one oxyalkylene block and at least one siloxane block, the oxyalkylene block containing at least 2 oxyalkylene groups of the formula -R1O-, wherein R1 is an alkylene radical, the siloxane block containing at least 2 units of the formula <FORM:1103201/C3/1> , wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon (h.c.) or halo-h.c. radical, or a divalent h.c. radical and b is 1, 2 or 3, there being at least one unit in which at least 1 R is a divalent h.c. radical, the oxyalkylene and siloxane blocks being interconnected by the divalent h.c. radicals. The block copolymers can have a linear, cyclic, branched or cross-linked structure and can have terminal functional groups. Numerous examples are given of surfactants and known builders therefor. The weight ratio of the copolymer to surfactant is usually from 0.001/1 to 99/1. In a typical Example (1) aqueous solutions containing 1% (wt.) of sodium lauryl sulphate modified with different amounts of a certain block copolymer were prepared, and aliquot portions of these solutions were diluted ten-fold and tested by (i) measuring the surface tension of each solution, and (ii) agitating the solutions and measuring the foam heights. Uses: as detergents (see Division C5), emulsifiers, foamers, wetting agents, dispersing agents, flocculants and penetrants.ALSO:A composition for reducing the surface tension of an aqueous solution comprises an organic surfactant and an organosiloxane-oxyalkylene block copolymer in which the siloxane and oxyalkylene blocks are interconnected by divalent hydrocarbon radicals (see Division C3). The weight ratio of the copolymer to surfactant is usually from 0.001/1 to 99/1. Numerous anionic, cationic, non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants are specified. Known builders for the surfactants may also be added. The composition is usually in the form of an aqueous solution containing from 0.00001 to 75% (weight) of the block copolymer. Aqueous compositions are used in the examples.
