Abstract
Granular material consisting of grains of corundum, SiC, quartz, emery or fireclay and a binder of corundum or SiC or a mixture thereof is produced by a process comprising mixing the grains with a binder-starting material, granulating the mixture and firing the granules at a high temperature in the presence of carbon and compressed air to convert the binder-starting material into the binder. Preferably the binder-starting material consists of clay powder and felspar powder and firing takes place in a vertical oven. Water glass and SiO2 may also be used as binder-starting materials. The carbon may be added to the binder-starting material before or after mixing with the granules. Further carbon may be added to form a coating before firing or alternatively a carbon-free coating of finely ground material may be used. In the examples the firing temperatures are between 1150 DEG and 1620 DEG C.
