Abstract
1,102,991. Clutches. SMITH'S INDUSTRIES Ltd. 29 May, 1964 [4 March, 1963], No. 8546/63. Heading F2C. In a synchromesh clutch of the coned friction ring type the normal single cone is replaced by multiple transversely nested cones to increase the total frictional area without increasing the overall axial dimension. The form shown in Fig. 1 incorporates a baulk ring 29 and friction cones 19, 38 mounted between the baulk ring and a conical extension 15 of a gear pinion 11. The cone 19 is coupled by splines 17, 18 to the extension 15 and cone 38 is coupled by splines 36, 37 to baulk ring 29. The gear shift sleeve 23 carries pressed metal lugs 25 with rounded projections 8 engaging recesses 7 in sleeve teeth 21, the ends of the lugs bearing against the baulk ring 29. The pinion 11 and ring 29 are provided with cammed dog teeth 13, 31. An alternative form including a baulk ring is also described, Fig. 9 (not shown), as well as forms in which the ring is omitted, Figs. 2-7 (not shown). The clutch is also described as incorporated in the transmission including a magnetic particle clutch and a gear-shift actuator described in Specification 996,377, Figs. 8-10 (not shown).
