Abstract
CaO is produced in fluidized bed by feeding a mixture of calcareous material and solid fuel from above into a fluidized bed reactor preheated to 850 DEG C., supplying excess air to fluidize the bed, and withdrawing product from the surface of the bed. The calcerous material may be limestone or ground sea shells, the fuel (having a M. pt. above 1400 DEG C.) may be charcoal, coke or coal, e.g. filter cake coal, and the decomposition temperature may be 950-1050 DEG C. In the Figure, coal and shells (e.g. 28 Tyler mesh) are fed from hoppers 24 and 25 resp. via E.M. vibrators, through water-cooled tube 11, and the bed is initially heated to 850 DEG C. by coal gas flame (burner 21) which is extinguished when the bed level reaches thermocouple 28. Temperature is controlled automatically (33) by the feed of coal and by water cooler 37. Exhaust gases pass through cyclone 22 (whence solids return to the bed) <FORM:1102790/C1/1> and are used to heat incoming air in 14. Baffle 33 controls the residence time of the solids. A mixture of lime and ash is withdrawn through pipe 12.
