Abstract

Polymers are obtained by self-condensation of compounds of formula R1(CH2OR)x, where R is an alkyl group, R1 is a divalent or trivalent aromatic residue which is free of oxygen bonded directly to the aromatic nucleus, and x is 2 or 3, whereby aromatic hydrogen atoms in R1 are eliminated by reaction with -OR radicals with the formation of an alcohol. The aromatic residue may contain nitrogen or sulphur atoms, preferably linking two or more aromatic nuclei. The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, with heating, optionally in a solvent. In Examples polymers are obtained from p-xylyleneglycol dimethyl ether and from p-xylyleneglycol dibutyl ether.
