Abstract
Open-cell rigid polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting a polyisocyanate with a polyol or mixture of polyols having an average hydroxyl number of 150 to 300 and a functionality of at least 3 in the presence of water and a surfactant, the NCO/total active hydrogen atom ratio being at least 1.3, and thereafter exposing the resultant foam to the atmosphere. The polyisocyanates may be aromatic polyisocyanates, reaction products thereof with a deficiency of a polyhydric alcohol or they may be blocked. The polyols are suitably adipate esters of triols, polyesters based on ricinoleic acid or styrenated fatty acids or condensation products of caprolactone and triols. Preferred polyols are propylene oxide addition products of glycerol, 1,2,6-hexane triol or trimethylol propane. Tertiary amines and/or metalorganic compounds may be used as catalysts, if desired. The surfactant is more suitably an organosilicon polymer.
