Abstract
Vinyl chloride is made by continuously feeding substantially equimolar quantities of hydrogen chloride and acetylene at normal pressure into a reaction chamber containing a mercuric chloride catalyst supported on a fixed bed of a carrier material, removing the gaseous reaction products from the reaction chamber, recycling a portion of said gaseous products to the reaction chamber such that the volume ratio of the fresh reactants to recycled gases is from 1:1 to 1:3, and adjusting the velocity of the gases fed to the reaction chamber so that the reaction occurs throughout the whole length of the chamber at 110-170 DEG C. It is preferred to cool and compress to 30-35 DEG C. and 6-8 atm. gauge, that portion of the products not recycled to obtain a gas phase containing unreacted hydrogen chloride and acetylene and any inert gas introduced with the reactants, and a liquid phase containing vinyl chloride, to further cool the liquid phase and use it as a scrubbing liquid to remove the hydrogen chloride and acetylene from the gas phase, whereafter the hydrogen chloride and acetylene are desorbed from the liquid phase and returned to the reactor. The process is illustrated by reference to drawings (not shown).
