Abstract

A solid defoamant composition comprises (1) a water-insoluble emulsifying agent, (2) a liquid organopolysiloxane defoaming agent and (3) a water-insoluble wax having a M.P. above 80 DEG C. Ingredient (1) is preferably a self-emulsifying wax having a drop point above 45 DEG C., e.g. reaction products of stearyl alcohols and polyethylene glycols. Ingredient (2) is a liquid siloxane or a siloxane paste, e.g. liquid dimethylsiloxane containing 1 to 10% by wt. of SiO2. Ingredient (3) can be a polyethylene wax having a M.W. above 3500, or a derivative of Montan wax. Preferably the composition consists of (by wt.), 15 to 60% of (1), 15 to 35% of (2), and 25 to 50% of (3). The composition is preferably made by heating, with stirring, the 3 ingredients to at least the M.P. of the ingredients, and, if desired, allowing the resulting mixture to solidify in moulds. Examples of the above compositions are given. Uses: for preventing or reducing the generation of foam in aqueous media at above 40 DEG C. (see Division B1).ALSO:The generation of foam in an aqueous medium maintained at a temperature above 40 DEG C is prevented or reduced by contacting the foam or the aqueous medium with a solid defoamant composition comprising (1) a water-insoluble emulsifying agent, (2) a liquid organopolysiloxane defoaming agent and (3) a water-insoluble wax having a M.P. above 80 DEG C (see Division C3). The emulsifying agent (1) may be a self-emulsifying wax. The preferred de-foaming agent (2) is a combination of a dimethylpolysiloxane with from 1% to 10% by weight of finely-divided silica. The wax (3) may be a polyethylene or montan wax. Preferred proportions are:-(1) 15% to 60% by weight; (2), 15% to 35% by weight; (3) 25% to 50% by weight.
