Abstract

A composition suitable for reducing vapour space corrosion comprises a C4 to C8 mono- or di-amine not containing an hydroxyl, phenyl or phenylene group, an alkyl phenol in which the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl group or the sum of the alkyl groups is at most 10, and a carrier for the amine and the phenol. The carrier may be a mineral or synthetic lubricating oil such as a polymerized olefin, a polyalkylene glycol, a polyphenyl ether, a methyl and/or phenyl silicone polymer, or an organic ester for example 2-ethyl-hexylsebacate or a C4 to C10 carboxylic acid ester of pentaerythritol or dipentaerythritol, a water - lubricating oil emulsion, a hydrocarbon fuel such as gasoline or fuel oil, a grease, a printing ink, a paint or lacquer, paraffin or a vegetable wax, or asphalt. Amines specified include butylamine, pentylamine, hexylamine, cyclohexylamine, octylamine, 2-methylpiperazine, N,N1-dimethylpiperazine, N,N1-dimethyl-1, 3-propanediamine and pyridine. Mixtures of amines may be used. The phenol may be a cresol, a xylenol, a tert-butylphenol, a di-tert-butylphenol, 2, 6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol, or iso-octylphenol. Mixtures of phenols may be used. In Examples compositions containing mineral oils and water-oil emulsions stabilized with glycerol monoleate are described.
