Abstract
Coating composition vehicles which are capable of forming a hard coating at room temperature in the absence of a curing catalyst comprise an organic solvent solution of (a) a curable epoxidized ester of a natural or synthetic fatty acid, which fatty acid contains 8-26 carbon atoms in the fatty chain, and a polyhydric alcohol of 2-10 carbon atoms, the ester having 3-10% oxirane oxygen; and (b) a predominantly monomeric polycarboxylic partial ester having an acid value of at least 50 and which is the esterification product of a polyol which is a monomeric or oligomeric polyhydric alcohol and a chlorinated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride thereof, if desired in admixture with a non-chlorinated polycarboxylic acid or anhydride, at least 2 of the -OH groups of the polyol being esterified with the chlorinated dicarboxylic acid and, if used, the non-chlorinated polycarboxylic acid. The vehicles may be pigmented to give coating compositions and may also contain curing catalyst such as benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide and phosphoric acid.ALSO:Predominantly monomeric polycarboxylic partial esters are produced by esterifying a polyhydric alcohol with a chlorinated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, possibly in admixture with a non-chlorinated dicarboxylic anhydride in solution in xylene, at least 2 of the alcoholic -OH groups being esterified. In examples of the preparation of the esters the dicarboxylic acid material is hexachloroendomethylenetetra-hydrophthalic acid or its anhydride with or without phthalic anhydride, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride or hexahydrophthalic anhydride and the polyhydric alcohol is pentaerythritol and/or 1,1,1-trimethylol-ethane.
