Abstract
Cellulose organic acid ester filaments suitable for making tobacco smoke filters for cigarettes are produced by dry spinning a solution containing the ester and 5 to 40% by weight (based on the weight of the cellulose ester) of a mixed organic acid ester of sucrose (see Heading B5B). The mixed sucrose ester may be the acetate/propionate, acetate/isobutyrate or propionate/isobutyrate. The filters may be made by collecting the filaments into a tow, applying to the tow a plasticizer such as triacetin, and forming the tow into a filter rod. The tow may be crimped prior to the application of the plasticizer. After is has acquired sufficient rigidity the tow is cut into short lengths for attachment to cigarettes.
