In an engine starting apparatus the motor includes a part 39 movable in a direction parallel to the motor shaft and connected to the pinion by one or more links 40 pivotally connected to the yoke and resilient means 41, 42 urges the part to a position in which the pinion is inoperative, the arrangement being such that when the field system of the motor is energized the part is attracted by one or more polepieces 33, 34 of the motor and acts through the link or links to move the pinion to its operative position. The part 39 may carry a contact piece associated with the motor armature circuit. The poles of the motor may be individually wound.
