Abstract

1,100,854. Abrading. GEORGE R. CHURCHILL CO. Inc. 15 June, 1965 No. 25280/65. Heading B3D. A buffing wheel section comprises an annular element 26 of buffing material and a retaining disc 10 having portions 28 extending through the element and clinched over the buffing material on the side of the element opposite the disc. The retaining disc has a central hole 12 defined by an upstanding rim 14 and the marginal edge of the disc is bent to form a rim 20, Fig. 2, from which extend long and short projections 16, 18, the long sections being strengthened by having a ribbed cross-section. The buffing material consists of a plurality of layers of strips of cloth or other material which is bias cut and folded medially along a wire. The material may be held in its gathered position by adhesive. The strip is helically wound upon itself and the projections 16 of the retaining disc pressed through the material, the ends 28 being clinched over. In another embodiment, the buffing material consists of a plurality of segments 42, Fig. 6, connected together by wires 44, the projections 16 of the retaining disc being clinched over the wires. Each segment consists of strands 46 of fibrous material such as sisal twine enclosed in cloth wrappers 48 secured to the strands by rows of stitches 50. Adjacent segments may be secured together with staples 54. In a further embodiment, each buffing segment comprises an elongated length of cloth or fabric folded upon itself, the elements being connected together by weaving wires 60 and the retaining disc.
