Abstract

1,100,332. Air filter. EVANS, ADLARD & CO. Ltd. 12 March, 1965 [14 March, 1964], No. 10911/64. Heading BIT. [Also in Division B5] A respiratory filter element comprises a layer of felted glass fibres 3 deposited on a porous former 1 of foamed polyurethane, having rows of blind holes in one side to extend the filtering surface. In manufacture, a web of foamed polyurethane is passed through a phenolic resin bath and a curing oven to rigidity the polyurethane web, which is then cut into square slabs. A slab is placed in a tray (16) which is indexed between guides (17) under laterally reciprocating cutters (29) (Figs. 6-9, not shown). The cutters are mounted on a slide (28) which is reciprocated by the rotating chuck (35) of a drilling machine, and are moved downwards, cutting a row of rectangular holes in the slab (14), at each position of the slab. The slide (28) may carry more than one row of cutters (29), possibly enough to cut all the holes in one operation. The machined slab is cut to circular form and an acid slurry is passed through, depositing a layer of glass fibres of 0.05 to 3 microns diameter thereon. The former is then sealed in a peripheral flange 4, possibly with a non-rigidified polyurethane foamed protecting layer 6 over the fibrous layer. Instead of rectangular the blind holes may be circular, or the holes may be replaced by concentric corrugations.
