Abstract

1,199,423. Continuous casting; making moulds. IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd. 8 Nov., 1968 [27 Nov., 1967], No. 53849/67. Headings B3A and B3F. A continuous casting mould 21 comprises a thermally conductive support 28, e.g. mild steel or copper, having a non-porous layer of refractory material 22, e.g. alumina, zirconium triboride, silicon carbide or tungsten carbide, on its inner surface, the support having been deposited on to said layer so that the layer and support are in intimate contact with one another. A tube 27 may be provided for conducting liquid metal from a holding furnace to the mould. In one embodiment the mould is prepared by depositing a layer of alumina on an aluminium mandrel 20, spraying copper on to said layer until a sufficient thickness has been deposited to allow for machining of the support, and then removing the mandrel by axially boring through the mandrel to leave approximately a 0À01 inch wall thickness and subsequently dissolving out this thickness of aluminium with caustic soda. The tube 27 may also be made by winding refractory cloth or string to the required shape and may be reinforced by incorporating longitudinally extending rods therein of low thermal expansion, e.g. of an alloy containing 36% Ni, 0.5% C, 0.5% Mn and 63% Fe.
