[Also in Division G2] Water - insoluble glycerol di - ethers having the following formula are prepared by known methods: where n=0, R<SP>1</SP> is C 12 H 25 and R<SP>2</SP> is C 8 H 17 , C 12 H 25 or C 18 H 37 ; or where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are both C 12 H 25 and (R<SP>3</SP>-O) n is (CH 2 CH 2 O) 2 , CH 2 CH(OH)CH 2 O, (CH 2 ) 4 OCH 2 CH(OH)CH 2 O, (CH 2 CH 2 O) 4 CH 2 CH(OH)CH 2 O or C 6 H 4 OCH 2 - CH(OH)CH 2 O. The compound where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are both C 12 H 25 and n=0 is made by adding dodecyloxypropylene oxide dropwise to n-dodecanol and a BF 3 -diethyl ether adduct.
