Abstract
1,198,251. Moulding layered products from powders. BECKMAN-RIIC Ltd. 27 July, 1967 [27 April, 1966], No. 18434/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Division G2] In double beam absorbtion spectroscopy examination wherein one block containing a mixture of known and unknown constituents dis - persed in a transparent carrier is normally compared with a positionally adjustable wedge shaped carrier block containing the known constituent, the wedge shaped block is replaced by a parallel sided block comprising first and second coalesced wedge shaped layers one whereof comprises the known constituent in the carrier and the other only the carrier whereby deviation of the beam arising from a wedge shaped block and the use of compensating means therefore is avoided. The first wedge shaped layer 9 is formed by compressing powder in a die I to a non-coalesced state between a horizontal faced bottom die element 8 and a plunger (4<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 1 (not shown), having an inclined lower face. The second layer 10 is formed by compressing additional powder by a plunger 4 e.g. actuated by an hydraulic press, under a sufficient pressure to coalesce both layers 9 and 10, to form a block having parallel upper and lower faces, with the moulding space sealed by a resilient plunger collar 7 and O ring 6 and connected to a vaccum source via an outlet 5. In forming each layer either the plunger 4 may directly contact the member or an intermediate member may be used.
