Abstract
1,198,195. Polymer hydrogenation with threecomponent catalysts. BRIDGESTONE TIRE K.K. 24 July, 1968 [27 July, 1967], No. 35374/68. Heading C3P. [Also in Division B1] A process for the catalystic hydrogenation of a polymer, e.g. of butadiene or styrene-butadiene copolymer comprises reacting the polymer having hydrogenatable unsaturated bonds in a solution form with hydrogen by the use of a catalyst consisting of (1) a metal salt of a salt forming organic compound, said metal being nickel or cobalt, (2) BF 3 and (3) an organometallic compound of formula MR n , wherein M is Al, Mg or Li, R is a hydrocarbon having from 1-12 carbon atoms, H or an alkoxy radical and n is the valence number of M, the molar ratio of the metal salt to BF 3 being within the range 1: 0À5 to 1: 20 and the molar ratio of the metal salt to the organometallic compound being within the range 1: 0À5 to 1: 10. The preferred hydrogen pressure is less than 50 atm. with a suitable temperature range of from 0‹ to 120‹ C. The above catalysts may also be used to polymerize an unsaturated monomer and then to hydrogenate. Such polymers as are suitable include diene polymers such as homopolymers and copolymers of conjugated dienes, and copolymers of these dienes with unsaturated compounds such as vinyl substituted aromatics
