Abstract

1,197,741. Contacting gases with liquids. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 Dec., 1967 [6 Jan., 1967], No. 975/67. Heading B1R. [Also in Division C1] In a process for absorbing ammonia in phosphoric or sulphuric acids, mixtures of these with or without nitric acid, and mixtures of phosphoric and nitric acids, gaseous ammonia (with or without air and/or steam) is passed in an upward stream in countercurrent with a downward-flowing stream of the above acid or acids in a gas/liquid contact apparatus, for example, of the type shown in Fig. 1, in which; the tower 1 has three transverse grids 2 between which is packing material consisting of light-weight buoyant spheres 3 which, when ammonia entering at 5, passes upwardly through the tower, are maintained in a floating, turbulent state. The acid or acid mixture enters at 4 and flows under gravity down the tower and is contacted intimately with the gas, by means of the turbulent spheres 3. The solution of salts formed flows out of outlet 6 and steam produced leaves via the top of the tower where a cyclone separator 7 removes from it any entrained ammoniated product, which is recycled to the outlet 6. Some or all of the product at outlet 6, is recycled to acid inlet 4, the rest being withdrawn at 11.
