Abstract
1,197,221. Foam containing laminate. T.C.T. SALES PTY. Ltd. 9 Aug., 1967 [12 Aug.. 1966], No. 36578/67. Heading B5N. A method of making a foam plastics laminate comprising two skins of facing material e.g. of plywood, hardboard, asbestos cement, gypsum plaster board, paper, paperboard, metal e.g. steel or aluminium or plastics material with a layer of cellular plastics foam e.g. polyurethane foam disposed between and united thereto, comprises advancing the skins by conveyers 26 and 27 at a given spacing past an outlet 25 which lies between them, dispensing from said outlet which may be in the form of one or a plurality of nozzles, in the form of a froth which is just sufficiently viscous to be selfsupporting when dispensed, a foamable liquid reaction mixture which reacts to produce a cellular plastics foam, and allowing the mixture to expand to fill the space between the skins. Frothing may be effected by the volatilization of a liquid which boils at low temperature, foaming by the volatilization of a second liquid which boils at a higher temperature. The facing materials may be in the form of continuous sheets or of separate sheets, the butted ends thereof being taped prior to application of the froth. In a preferred embodiment, one or both of the facing materials may be profiled. Alternatively, when paper is used as the facing material, the edges of the paper may be folded inwardly to confine the foam. Ducts, doors and windows may be incorporated in the laminate during assembly. Examples are given.
