Abstract

1,197,075. Plying strands; warping. A. W. VIBBBR. 31 July, 1967, No. 35016/67. Headings D1D and D1M. A plying arrangement comprising a supply 11 of a first strand a, a suport 20 carrying a package 21 of a second strand b, a shaft 14 operable to balloon strand a about package 21 and to ply the strands together at a plying point P, has means such as a driven capstan 45 to feed the strand a at substantially constant speed toward the plying point, means such as capstans 27 to feed the plied strand from the plying point under tension and means, e.g. situated at 22 to subject the strand b to a constant tension immediately before it passes to the plying point. By suitable arrangement of the tensions in the constituent and plied strands symmetrical or assymetrical plied yarns can be obtained. Because of capstan 45 the strands at the plying point can be subjected to a tension lower than normal. Auxiliary flyer. Flyer 24 in which the plying point is located is freely rotatable on a fixed tube 36. Capstan 45 is rotatable on a stub shaft mounted on the inside of the flyer and is geared to a gear 47 on the end of tube 36. Thus when the flyer is rotated by the ballooning strand the capstan is driven to forward the strand at a predetermined speed. The strand may as shown pass through a guide 44 to the capstan or directly to the capstan. An idler capstan may be provided on the opposite wall of the flyer to guide the strand b, so that the strand a and b are fed symmetricall to the flying point. Two driven capstans may be provided in the flyer to feed strand a. It is stated that a similar flyer may be provided inverted to be situated at the lower end of a spindle about which the strand balloons, passing downwardly. Beam winding In Figs. 4, 5, 6, not shown, plied strands, from a row of spindles similar to that shown in Fig. 2 are wound directly, side by side on a beam (169) to be ready for further use. The beam (169) is suported on a pair of rollers (162, 164) one or both of which are driven: hydraulic means cause arms, (170) to press the ends of the beam shaft downwardly so as to force the beam into driven engagement with rollers. (162, 164). The rollers (162, 164) and the beam are mounted within a casing (152) carried by rollers (160) so that the whole can be traversed, e.g. by cam means (182) along the axis of the beam so that the strands, which pass through a row of fixed guides (154) are traversed as they are wound on adjacent areas of the beam. Strand tensioning device Each strand passing to the beam may be tensioned by the device of Fig. 7, not shown. This comprises fixed rods (187, 189) under and over which the strand passes and a leaf spring (191) which presses the strand passing over rod (189) with a pressure which is adjustable by means of a thumb screw (194).
