[Also in Division G1] A conveyer chain 8, Fig. 1, has bolts 14 which screw into a head portion 30 of a container gripping device provided with four flexible fingers 2 separated by slots 3, Fig. 4. The fingers, which enclose a tapered passage at their end, may enter the cap 12 of a container 11 and be splayed apart against the action of an annular spring 13 by downward movement of a tube 4 slidable within the fingers under the action of a spring 6, a bar 5 limiting the downward movement of the tube by abutting a stop 9, as in Fig. 6 (not shown). In Figs. 7 and 8, the containers 11 are conveyed by a belt 15 on to pans 17 on a rotating table 16 and the gripping devices 30 are brought along by the conveyer 8 so that a guide rail 22 may compress the spring 6 and raise the bar 5 and the tube 4 of each device at the same time as a guide 21 raises a roller 20 and a rod 19 supporting a container. As each container is raised, its cap 12 is brought into engagement with the contracted fingers 2. The bar 5 can then be lowered by another section of guide 22 to release the fingers and grip the container, and the pan 17 be arranged to descend (see Fig. 9, not shown). Thereafter the containers are immersed in a bath of hot water to check their condition.
